The Bottom Line

It doesn't get more classic than Mary Poppins, and apart from The Wizard of Oz this is probably one of the best musicals ever to make it to the silver screen. It was filmed during a golden age in Hollywood and uses amazing technicolor and animation, the flawless visuals are brought to life once more through the magic of high definition restoration on blu-ray, and this re-release makes for an unforgettable at-home viewing experience. You won't even feel like you're watching a film from 50 years ago! (Well, apart from the clothing and Dick Van Dyke's terrible British accent! No one could get away with that today.)

There are few films that pretty much everyone can agree on, but Mary Poppins has an enduring appeal, from the wonderful songs to the fantastical sets and Julie Andrews' portrayal of the perfect nanny, it couldn't be improved upon. Although many of the Bonus Features are essentially the same as the last re-release of the film, for the 50th anniversary editions there are few nice additions, like "Mary-OKE", for those of you who can't help but sing-along (which, let's be honest, is all of us), this fun feature will help you learn the words perfectly, and if you want to learn more about the composers behind the songs, then "Becoming Mr. Sherman" will definitely be of interest.

Our verdict on Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary Edition? It's practically perfect in every way (wink, wink), and you won't regret taking this one home to enjoy with your friends and family - there's only one word to describe it: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

New Blu-ray Bonus Fetaures:

  • Mary-OKE’s – New piece highlights popular music from the film, specifically “Spoon Full of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” Step In Time,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and allows viewer to sing-along to animated words that display onscreen in unique ways.
  • Becoming Mr. Sherman: Join actor Jason Schwartzman as he sits down for a fun and musical-filled afternoon with Richard Sherman. In the new film, SAVING MR BANKS, Schwartzman portrays the Disney Legend... half of the famous composing team, the Sherman Brothers who wrote all the classic songs from MARY POPPINS, as well as many other favorites. Hear heartwarming, revealing stories about the making of this beloved musical, get more insight on working with Walt Disney, and get a unique sneak peek into SAVING MR BANKS, starring Tom Hanks, and Emma Thompson.
