The Bottom Line

When it comes to nature documentaries, and more specifically monkey documentaries, Disney has managed to hit it out of the park every time. Chimpanzee showed us the magic of an orphan in the wild finding a family, so finding unbelievable real stories that will tug on your heartstrings is what they're all about. Monkey Kingdom is no exception, their antics and the trials and joys of their lives is guaranteed to capture your attention. In Monkey Kingdom we follow the story of Maya, a single female macaque monkey who has no power in her pack structure, until she teams up with Kumar and starts a family - but even though she has more respect, she is still in constant danger. Using comedian Tina Fey as a narrator is a nice touch, her voice lending even more drama to Maya's incredible journey. Taking us into the lush wilds of Sri Lanka, the brightly lit, scenic shots in this documentary look spectacular on Blu-ray.

This is Disneynature's eighth release, and each Blu-ray usually comes with a huge stack of extras. Monkey Kingdom is no different, one of the features even showcases the team working with legendary conservationist Jane Goodall (if you're interested in nature, then her life's work will blow your mind!) "Tales from The Kingdom" shows the difficulty the directors had filming in a natural habitat. This emotional tale from the animal kingdom is definitely worth bringing home and watching with the whole family.
