What to Watch Instead of the Olympics

Dec 27, 2006

Unless you're really into running or swimming, you're probably not looking forward to the next few weeks of all Olympics, all the time on the tube. Ah, but this is where Kidzworld comes in. After scanning the airwaves for the entire month of August, we've come up with several sweet alternatives to all the jumping, fencing, tennis and...well, you get the idea.

TV Shows - A Dose of Reality

It shouldn't surprise you that there are plenty of reality shows competing for your attention, particularly since Survivor (the king of all reality shows!) first started off as a summer series. It makes sense, then, that the network that Survivor emerged from (CBS) is back with brand new seasons of old favorites. Both The Amazing Race and Big Brother 5 on the air right now just waiting for you to tune in! The great thing about Big Brother is that if just watching it on TV isn't enough for you, you can always sign up at the official site to watch it 24/7 via streaming web feed! And, of course, you can't have reality programming without something really weird and that's where UPN's Amish in the City comes in. The show follows five Amish teens as they're forced to live with six streetwise, city kids (and in case you don't know, the Amish don't dig technology - which means none of them have heard of Lindsay Lohan or Homer Simpson!)

TV Shows - Dramatic Effect

Maybe you're sick and tired of the whole reality thing, and you'd rather check out something of the fictional variety. Well, Fox had a hit last summer with The O.C. and they're looking to duplicate that success with North Shore. The show features a large cast of hotties - male and female - as they spend their days working at a Hawaiian resort hotel and their nights partying. Look for former Beverly Hills, 90210 bad girl Shannen Doherty to appear on North Shore later this season! Another hot summer show is Summerland, which casts former Full House star Lori Loughlin as a woman who must take care of her dead sister's children. Both of these shows emphasize sun and sand, so they're just perfect for this time of year.

TV Shows - Everything Else

If none of the above shows sound interesting, there are a few other choices spread around the various networks. ABC is rolling out the final season of The Drew Carey Show (yep, it's still on!), while Fox continues to unleash The Casino (the latest reality show from the creator of Survivor). And if you're dying for yet more new reality shows, UPN has Studio 7 (a combination game show/reality show from the creator of Who Wants to be a Millionaire). So, there's bound to be something on TV this month other than the Olympics worth watching.
