What do you get when you mix fraternity life with a little romance and a lot of fancy footwork? Stomp the Yard. We review this frat-life flick.

What do you get when you mix fraternity life with a little romance and a lot of fancy footwork? Stomp the Yard: the new dance movie featuring Columbus Short. We check it out!

Steppin' On Up

Life is pretty tough for DJ (Columbus Short), a kid from the wrong side of the tracks who heads to university after being released from jail. But things start looking up when he meets April. Too bad she happens to be dating Grant, the star dancer for a fraternity stepping team. What's a guy to do? Well, join the rival fraternity stepping team, of course!

Stepping on Toes

It's going to take a lot of dance-offs to settle this war of rivals. The two fraternities fight over DJ while DJ and Grant fight among themselves. The stepping (a dance tradition rooted in African-American fraternities and popularized in the Broadway show Stomp) is impressive and there's a lot of it. But who's going to get the girl? And when is everybody going to learn to get along? You'll have to watch to find out.

DVD Features

The Stom the Yard DVD is a must-have for any dance fans. Learn all the moves from the movie with bonus dance sequence scenes, a featurette of the making of the movie and a hilarious gag reel of how NOT to dance!

The Bottom Line

If you're a fan of stepping, you'll be sure to dig this flick. There's plenty of drawn out dance sequences to please you here. However, if you're just looking for a great Friday night movie, you're better off catching something else. The story is more recycled than Al Gore's paper towels and the "romance" between DJ and April has about as much chemistry as a dead battery. Save yourself the misery and catch some stepping videos on YouTube.
