No. 1: Clothing
Don’t get your dad the standard department-store ties this year. It’s probably made out of an unnatural (man-made or synthetic) material, and it’s probably manufactured in an un-earth-friendly way! Instead, try finding a tie, shirt or pair of pants made of organic cotton, bamboo or some other green material.
No. 2: Transportation
Maybe you, your mom and your brothers and sisters can all chip in and get your dad a greener way to commute to work each morning: a bike! If your dad already has a bicycle, think of some accessories you can get him to make his ride to work each morning go more smoothly. Some suggestions: a bike basket, saddle bags, a new helmet or a bell!
No. 3: Sports
If your dad’s a golf nut, you may be thinking of taking him out for a round of golf this Father’s Day. But many golf courses are environmental disasters – they reduce wildlife, consume a ton of water and use plenty of chemicals to keep their green, well, green. Do some research and take him to a course in your area that is certified to be environmentally sound (you can ask at the info desk).
No. 4: Food
What dad doesn’t love a good BBQ? Unfortunately, many brands of charcoal contain chemicals, coal and carbon-heavy pollutants that get released into the atmosphere every time you dad fires up the grill. This year, get him a bag of earth-friendly charcoal, which will be a completely natural lump charcoal that works just as well as the old kind dad’s used to, but without the chemicals.
No. 5: Beverages
Summer's coming up and you can help your dad cool off by getting him some great organic - or even homemade - bevvies for Father's Day. We're talking organic iced tea that you can buy from the supermarket or grocery store (just ask to tag along with your mom the next time she goes food shopping) and even making up a batch of lemonade or iced tea at home yourself! Or, get dad a gift card to his fave organic coffee shop, or buy him some organic or fair-trade coffee beans to brew at home!
