Hey defensiveend2,
Speed is one of the most important attributes for a defensive end. One second can make the difference between stopping a running back in his tracks or blowing by you for a touchdown. Besides having good speed, it's also important for a defensive end to be react quickly, once the football is snapped. The following drill is designed to improve both your speed and reaction time and will require the help of a friend:

React and Run

  • Start out by lying on the ground, either on your back or front.
  • Have a friend stand 30 yards away and yell out a snap count.
  • When you hear your friend yell the snap count, get up and run to them as fast as you can.
  • Practice this drill in sets of five and have your friend move around to different points, so you can practice reacting to the the sound of their voice.

Your speed and endurance can also be improved by practicing an incline running drill. Find a small incline or hill that's about 75 yards and run and high step it all the way up and then jog back down. Do four to five reps three times a week and you'll see an increase in both your endurance and quickness.

Another way to improve your speed and work on other football skills is to attend a summer football camp. For more info on summer football camps, talk to your coach, ask someone at your local community center or check out www.footballcamps.com.

Do you have a question on sports like hockey, football or skateboarding? Do you need some advice on fitness, P.E. class or health? to the Kidzworld Coach. Keep in mind peeps, the Kidzworld Coach isn't a doctor or a professional athlete or anything like that. He's just a dude who digs sports, plays 'em and knows a lot about 'em. You should always talk to your 'rents, a doctor or your school gym teacher before starting a new sport or a new exercise.
