2001 MTV Video Awards

Dec 27, 2006

I had a hard time staying awake or keeping interested while watching this year's show. The performances were average, Jamie Foxx was dull and heck, Lil Kim even wore a shirt. Snore!

Moon Men

Last year was cool because *NSYNC and other winners actually seemed excited. Remember Justin's chant, "We got a moonman! We got a Moonman!" This year - nuthin'. They won 4 awards (Best Dance Video, Best Pop Video, Best Group Video and Viewer's Choice) but only seemed mildly impressed with Best Dance Video. Other boring, unappreciative looking winners were Lady Marmalade's hussies, Lil Kim, Christina, Pink and Mya. They all looked like someone had just woken them up or something.

Presenters were not that great either. Will Smith was hysterical, but that was about it. Macy Gray - just say no! (and that's all I am going to say about that.) Everyone used their presenting time for their own cause. People promoted albums or thanked people involved with their own work. I guess the MTV crowd is a strong supporter of the "It's All About Me' campaign.

Performances

Alicia Keys was great. Loved Keys' work on the keys. It is nice to see someone do more than dance around. Linkin Park was cool too. Missy Elliot, JaRule and Jay-Z - whatever. Yawn. *NSYNC wanted to top last year's performance (which rocked) and I think they matched it. But who was that 43 year-old guy tryin' to busta-move like Michael Jackson? Oh yeah, it was Michael Jackson. Oops. Britney. Britney, Britney, Britney. I think she needs to learn to sing live now. She barely worked up a sweat - not a lot of dancin' this time around, just a lot of snake-carrying. Still, she lip-synched. The song itself - called I'm A Slave To You - was pretty good. It sounded much more grown-up than Brit's previous material. Now if only the lyrics weren't her whining about how grown-up she is.

What They Wore

Nothing special. No one was a huge debacle or embarassment. The Fashion Police's usual suspects - Lil Kim and Christina Aguilera - were eerily tame. Britney was a little over the top but nothing compared to her usual VMA outfits. Best dressed - again, no one stood out.

All in all, the MTV VMAs were a big disappointment. Even Kid Rock cussin' at the crowd was lame. The guest spots by SNL peeps fell short and Foxx failed miserably. I was actually relieved when it was over.
