Basketball Team Bonding :: Quiz the Coach

Jan 19, 2011

Question by CaptainConfused

So, I am the captain of a JV girl's basketball team this year. It's all 9th Graders except for two 10th graders. The problem is that we don't bond very well as a team and I think it is affecting the way we play together when game time comes. Any ideas on what I can do for the team as the captain? There are certain limits because of the amount of people we have (13).

Basketball Bull's Eye

You hit the bull’s eye ConfusedCaptain… nothing is more important than team chemistry in the game of basketball. Let’s brainstorm all the different ways to bring your team closer together.

Need to be Natural

First of all, it’s really important to not force anything. Don’t have a meeting announcing that you want to bring the team closer together. Sincere friendship only happens naturally when you spend time together.

Common Interests

You need to find out what your teammates like to do besides basketball, and then organize something casual that you can invite your teammates to attend… like:

  • Going out for pizza
  • Going to a movie (Oooh, and bonus if it’s about basketball!)
  • Going to the pool
  • Working out at a gym
  • Going on a hike
  • Go Shopping

Take a Trip

In my days of playing school sports, I found the best way for the team to bond is actually by entering a fun tournament where you travel to another city. You can have fundraisers and events to make money for the trip. If you’re lucky enough to do this, it will be so much fun for you and your teammates to travel on a bus together, share hotel rooms together, and try to win the tournament.
