Stanley Cup Finals: Canucks and Bruins (Game 7)

Jun 14, 2011

It's Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals between Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks and Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins. The Bruins have been pummelling the Canucks with lob-sided victories, but the Canucks have home-ice advantage. Neither team has won the Stanley Cup in 40 years...who will win tonight?

The Boston Bruins have won five Stanley Cups and are part of the Original 6 teams (that means they were one of the first six teams to make up the NHL). However, the Bruins have not won a Stanley Cup since 1971, when Bobby Orr was the best player in the league.

Bobby scored the most famous goal in NHL history in overtime against the St. Louis Blues while someone was trying to trip him. He went flying through the air and it became the most famous photograph in NHL history.

The Nucks have never won a Stanley Cup and they have been in the NHL for 41 years. In 1994, the team made it all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the New York Rangers, but lost by one goal. Canucks fans wanted a Cup so bad that there was a riot in Vancouver when their team lost on June 14th, 1994.

The pressure of this game is on Vancouver's goalie, Roberto Luongo. Boston's goalie, Tim Thomas, is going to win the Conn Smythe trophy (MVP) even if he loses so he's already proven himself. Tim has dominated most of the games and he has put all the pressure on Luongo, who was pulled for letting in four goals in four minutes in Game 6.

Here are the key players for the final game tonight in Vancouver:

  • #17 - Ryan Kesler (playing injured for the Canucks, but is definitely their leader)
  • #22 and #33 - Daniel and Henrik Sedin (these Canuck forwards scored the most points in the NHL the last two years)
  • #33 - Zdeno Chara (this Bruin has the best +/- rating of the playoffs)
  • #63 - Brad Marchand (the hottest Bruin in the past few games)
