Chris Hesse of Hoobastank Interview(pg. 2)

Dec 27, 2006
Sindy: Here's a funny question - Have you downloaded the Crawling in the Dark ringtone onto your phone?
Chris: I think all the different phone companies have it, so they're all probably different. I have T-Mobile, and I'm really, really disappointed in their version of it. It's the worst version I've ever heard in my entire life. It's just totally wrong. Like, whoever wrote it or computerized it should be shot. It's like, "Come on man, are you deaf?" Maybe to not have to pay for the rights, they just changed a few notes, you know, for copyright reasons.

Sindy: So what's in your CD player right now?
Chris: Well, I have an iPod, so every album I have is on there. What I've been listening to most is the Story of the Year CD cuz, you know, we're on tour with Story of the Year, P.O.D. and Linkin Park. It doesn't happen very often that I watch a band and get so inspired that I go out and buy the CD the next day, but that's what happened. They're such a good band - such a good live band. They're really energetic, and they have really good songs, and it's a really good CD.

Sindy: Who were your musical influences growing up?
Chris: A lot of classic stuff. My dad was a drummer too. I was influenced by him a lot. I was really into the classic rock - Jimi Hendrix and - uh - Eric Clapton and the good old stuff. I learned how to play drums listening to Rush albums.

Sindy: Incubus helped you get gigs early on. Are there any bands that you're trying to give a hand up to now?
Chris: We try to. My girlfriend plays in a band called Krave, and we've had them play with us a bunch. They're recording an independent album right now. Other than that, it's kinda hard. We take out our friends' bands that are already signed. You know, Incubus was helping us out before we were even signed - we've known them since before they were signed too. But when we take people out, I don't think of it as trying to help them out. We usually just take out bands who are cool - who we like to hang out with. I guess it's selfish - we take them out cuz we like hanging out with them. They're good company.

Sindy: Is there any advice you'd give to kidz who aspire to do what you're doing?
Chris: Yeah, um, my best advice is to not get discouraged. If there's something that you want to do - and this goes for anything, not just musicians - pursue it with everything you have and without any doubts. Just know that it's possible, cuz really anything is possible. Also, don't expect anything, but hope for everything. Work towards everything you want, but don't expect it.
