1Hey Coach,
I was invited to try out for a traveling baseball team but I think it would be different than playing league ball. Should I try out?

Hey basestealer45

Traveling baseball is for players and families who are interested in traveling to other communities to play baseball at a higher level than the regular Little League program. Teams travel to tournaments in different towns or even different states or countries. It's a great chance for more competitive players to develop their skills and play against the top players in their age group, but it's also a much different experience than league ball.

  • Traveling baseball is played at a higher level and is more competitive. You may have to play a position you're not used to playing and players usually don't receive equal playing time. More emphasis is placed on winning than in Little League baseball.
  • Traveling baseball can be expensive, so find out what the costs for your traveling baseball league are and find out if your parents are willing to cough up the cash. Some leagues can cost between $2,000 and $5,000 US to play. Many traveling baseball leagues hold fundraisers to help offset the costs of the league and may offer assistance to players who are unable to afford the costs.
  • Traveling baseball is a big time committment for both you and your parents, so make sure you talk to your parents before trying out. There are more practices and more games. Teams may also spend a lot of time traveling to various tournaments and your family may be expected to drive long distances every weekend during the season.
  • If you join a traveling baseball team, you may not be able to work a summer job or have time to participate in other summer activities.
  • If you are committed to playing baseball, a traveling team can be a great way to see new places, meet new friends and improve your baseball skills.

Do you need tips or advice on sports, fitness or health? to the Kidzworld Coach. Keep in mind peeps, the Kidzworld Coach isn't a doctor or a professional athlete or anything like that. He's just a dude who digs sports, plays 'em and knows a lot about 'em. You should always talk to your 'rents, a doctor or your school gym teacher before starting a new sport or a new exercise.
