Pokemon Ranger: Nintendo DS Video Game Review

Dec 27, 2006

The Pokemon Ranger video game for the Nintendo DS lets you become a Pokemon Ranger - a nature-preserving, Pokemon-protecting hero. You team up with a Minun or Plusle and get to explore the new Fiore Region, new cities, new people and new villains - the Go-Rock Squad! Gary got his game on to bring you a Pokemon Ranger game review.

Pokemon Ranger - Heroism 101

In Pokemon Ranger you're the one battling, not your Pokemon! You use a Capture Stylus on the DS' touch screen to draw loops around Pokemon, while they try to fight you off, until they're caught. Then they join you and can give you a boost in battle or help you solve a puzzle with their abilities. And you need all the help you can get to complete your Pokemon Ranger missions and stop the Go-Rock Squad!

Pokemon Ranger - Saving the Day

Capturing Pokemon with the Styler is a blast! It turns the slow captures of the older Pokemon games into a flurry of action that'll have you on the edge of your seat as you try to get one final loop around a mighty Pokemon. Leading a team of Pokemon around and using their abilities to overcome obstacles is cool too - it gives the game a Legend of Zelda feel!

Pokemon Ranger - Pokemon Problems

The biggest problem about Pokemon Ranger is that you can't evolve your Pokemon, or even take them from one area to another! In fact you can only use their abilities once, then they run off and you have to re-capture them if you still need their help.

Pokemon Ranger - Heroes or Zeroes?

It would be nice to be able to keep more than one Pokemon with you, and to be able to evolve or collect them, but Pokemon Ranger is still an excellent adventure game. It's awesome for Pokemon fans and has enough action and fun for Pokemon newbies too!

Pokemon Ranger Thumbs Up:

  • Capture Pokemon with the touch screen.
  • Use Pokemon abilities to beat challenges.
  • Compete in mini-games.

Pokemon Ranger Thumbs Down:

  • You can't evolve or collect Pokemon!
  • You can only use each Pokemon's power once.
