1Hey Coach,
My dad is the coach of my baseball team and I'm the starting catcher and my teammates think I get special treatment because I'm the coach's kid. I can tell they hate me and my dad. Should I quit?

Hey C_Dawg,
Being the coach's kid is never an easy position to be in. It makes you an easy target for criticism with teammates and possibly their parents. Baseball is a competitive sport and everybody wants to be the star, so there is going to be some jealousy.

It is important that you do not allow those people to take away your fun. After all, the reason you play baseball in the first place is to have some fun, right? So what if your dad is the coach? If you think you deserve to be the catcher, then you deserve to be the catcher.

Just make sure you don't give them a reason to think you are getting special treatment. Work as hard as the rest of them and don't go to your dad asking for special favors. If you think he is giving you preferential treatment, have a private talk with him and tell him to stop. And make sure your teammates respect you and your dad. If you catch them saying bad things about you or your dad, stand up for yourself and let them know you don't appreciate them saying those things.

So hang in there, have fun and don't quit. You have as much right to enjoy the great game of baseball as anyone else!

Do you need tips or advice on sports, fitness or health? Send it to the Kidzworld Coach. Keep in mind peeps, the Kidzworld Coach isn't a doctor or a professional athlete or anything like that. He's just a dude who digs sports, plays 'em and knows a lot about 'em. You should always talk to your 'rents, a doctor or your school gym teacher before starting a new sport or a new exercise.
