Fairies, murders, mystery and adventure collide in Folklore. Does the powerful PS3 bring the magic to life? Find out with our Folklore game review!

Sony's Folklore for the PS3 is an adventure game full of magic, mystery and murders! It opens the door from the small Irish town of Doolin to the magical Netherworld and puts two adventurers, Keats and Ellen, on a mission to solve some ancient murders. Does the mega-powerful PS3 bring this game of fairies and adventure to life or is it a snore? Gary's Folklore game review has the facts!

From Doolin to the Netherworld and Back Again

You start Folklore by taking turns playing as Keats and Ellen, running around Doolin and trying to solve murders. Then you end up traveling into the faerie Netherworld and battling through seven worlds by sucking the Id from faerie folk with awesome Sixaxis mini-games. After that, you use captured abilities to battle your enemies. The more folk powers you collect, the more powerful they are and the more you can use. Another cool feature is that you can build your own levels and let your friends try 'em out online!

Fun Fairy Magic

A few levels into the game, Folklore really starts rockin' - especially when you hit the Netherworld full of fairies and magic. The PS3 has the power to make the whole thing look fantastic, from spooky levels to incredible creatures and cool attacks. The story is terrific, too. Once you start unwinding the tangled tale you won't want to put Folklore down until the last piece of the puzzle falls into place.

Chaos, Confusion and Clunkyness

Load times suck, especially when you're running back-and-forth a lot. They add a bunch of "I could be doing something else right now time" to the game, and that's a bummer. The other big problem is that you can really mix-and-match the first few levels, swapping from Keats to Ellen and back, and it's easy to turn the story into a mess if you do. It works out in the end, but can make it frustrating at first.

Fun or Forgettable?

Folklore is a gorgeous adventure full of magic and excitement! It has an excellent story that will keep you thinking as you try to solve ancient murders by delving deep into faerie realms and uncovering bizarre secrets. It has a few problems, and takes a while to get going, but its definitely worth playing.

Thumbs Up:

  • It looks fantastic!

Thumbs Down:
