Destiny's Child - This Is Destiny's Child

Dec 27, 2006

Destiny's Child returned to their hometown of Houston, Texas for their first TV special - This Is Destiny's Child which aired August 30, 2001. The one-hour show was a mix of live concert performances, talk-time with Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams and childhood videos.

The bootylicious trio sang all their hits like No,No,No, Say My Name, Jumpin' Jumpin', Independent Women Part I, Bug A Boo, Bills,Bills,Bills and Survivor. On stage, they had a full band and a group of male and female back-up dancers. The girls sported a number of flashy coordinated costumes and dazzled the audience with their incredible vocals.

The coolest part of the show was the childhood videos. We got to see a glimpse of all three of the girls growing up. There were videos of a young Beyonce Knowles singing and doing dance routines with friends in her parents living room. Beyonce looks a lot like her mom. It was neat to see that singing and performing has been a passion for all the girls since an early age.

In between live performances and videos we learned a little more about Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. They talked about how amazing it was to do a special concert in their hometown, especially cuz they used to go to the stadium all the time for the rodeo and the carnival. The girls never thought they'd be performing there one day. They also talked about how great it is to be in the top female pop group in the world although they were quite humble about it. The three girls are very close and they think it's amazing to be up on-stage performing with each other, cuz they're all working for the same thing.

Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams told us how Beyonce Knowles came up with the idea for Survivor after people were joking about surviving the band after all of their group's member changes. She just took the 'survivor' concept and ran with it. Beyonce was nervous about sharing the idea with the girls, but they loved it instantly. It's a great song with a powerful message about surviving any obstacle.

I enjoyed the special and it's clear that Destiny's Child is a true talent. After watching the hour long show, it's easy to see why they are the top pop girl group in the world.
