Magician's Quest: Mysterious Times :: DS Game Preview

Apr 28, 2009

Magician's Quest is set in a wonderfully cute world where people attend Magic Academy and use what they learn to better the lives of those around them. In the game, you play as a new student of the Academy and you meet new friends, earn money, buy accessories, and learn new spells in class.

Hey, This Feels Familiar!

In many ways, Magician's Quest is similar to Nintendo's Animal Crossing, right down to how the world rolls around as you move on the map. In the game, you complete daily activities to improve your character's life. Just like in Animal Crossing, there is fishing and bug collecting and you can also buy furniture to use to decorate your house. There are over 150 unique characters to befriend, including strange animal-people that you may have gotten used to by now. Your relationships with your classmates and townspeople will have levels that can improve or worsen over time depending on whether you do things like giving presents to them.

But...It's Different!

At the same time, there are huge differences that make Magician's Quest a worthwhile title to consider. For one thing, you are a wizard in this game! There are several themes in the game like Who, Where, When, and Do and each have 15 elements. You can cast spells by combining these various elements together and preparing a spell on your wand. Although you still have limited space in your inventory, you don't have to worry about carrying a watering can or fishing rod since your magic wand can transform into it!

There are lots of things that you can customize in Magician's Quest. There are 1,600 different kinds of clothing, furniture, characters and accessories to find, buy and use. You can even customize the music and sound effects with the music editor, changing the bell and hourly tones, as the game runs in real-time. You can connect with up to four other friends via Wi-Fi and visit each other's town and trade spells. You can even work together to combine your magical abilities and complete difficult tasks.

Magician's Quest is a great game to pick up if you are a Harry Potter, Animal Crossing, or MySims fan. It is a great game to play even if you are not a fan! Be sure to keep an eye on store shelves next week, when the game comes out.
