The Best PS5 Games So Far

The Must-Play Experiences on Sony’s Newest Console

Jul 12, 2021

PS5 is off to a great start with a solid handful of fun software to choose from! There is something for everyone this early in the console’s life after releasing last Fall. If you are one of the many players who has had a difficult time finding a console or are just looking for something new to play, here are the best games on the PlayStation 5!

Astro’s Playroom

If you own a PS5, this delightful gem comes pre-installed. Astro’s Playroom is a part technical showpiece, part really fun platformer. Playroom stars Astro Bot, the lovable mascot that was introduced in 2018’s Astro Bot Rescue Misson. Instead of pushing the boundaries of PSVR, Astro’s Playroom is all about exploring the inner workings of the PS5 itself, and what the DualSense is capable of. You explore the animated renditions of key components of the PS5’s hardware like the ultra-fast SSD Speedway and the stunning GPU Jungle. As you progress you witness and collect so many iconic touchstones from PlayStation’s history. And to top it off, it is just a solid 3D platformer. The controller gimmicks are remarkable, and it is well worth experiencing as the first game you play when you first boot up the machine.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The follow-up to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man comes in the form of Miles Morales, a smaller but perhaps stronger entry in Insomniac Games’ take on the Web-Slinger. Miles Morales is a leap forward technically with its awesome Performance Ray-Tracing mode which runs the game at a smooth 60 FPS while keeping the stunning reflections and lighting made possible only with state-of-the-art ray-tracing technology. Such smooth gameplay and crisp visuals make this new Spider-Man feel next-gen, and the story of Miles taking over for Peter Parker while he goes off on vacation is packed with great character moments and plenty of spider-fun.

There is no game quite like Bugsnax. In this first-person adventure, you take on the role of a fuzzy Grumpus journalist sent out to discover the mysterious island that is home to the titular Bugsnax creatures. They’re like Pokemon, but food. They even say their own names as they slither, flutter, and wander about. You spend the game traversing different parts of the island all while figuring out how to catch each species. The less you know about Bugsnax, the better. It is a constantly surprising game that keeps you on your toes with both the story and the capturing puzzles.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

One of the Wii U’s best games (with a great Nintendo Switch port) was Super Mario 3D World. The coop platforming was a blast with friends and is still a great game to jump into today. If you have already cruised through 3D World or only have access to a PlayStation 5, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a perfect second helping. Like Mario, Sackboy is a coop 3D platformer that you can enjoy with three other friends but with a LittleBigPlanet twist. Previous LittleBigPlanet games were all 2D games, but Big Adventure brings the adorable Sackboy into the third dimension. The signature wackiness of LBP is still there, just on a bigger scale.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

We loved Rift Apart, and it couldn’t be an easier recommendation for gamers of any age and skill level. It is an explosive action-platformer where you take control of two alternate universe Lombaxes, on an adventure across the multiverse. The humor, action, locations, are all turned up to 11 in Rift Apart and it is a journey that all PS5 players owe themselves to go on.

All of Your PS4 Games

The PS5 is backward compatible with your existing PS4 games library. Some games that have options for performance and resolution can take advantage of the PS5’s power and fast loading. The loading times will not be as fast as PS5 native games, but still a lot faster than playing on the PS4’s default hard drive. One of the coolest things to do with the PS5 is dive back into your library and see how your favorite games look and feel. There is plenty to play while we wait  for the next big games like Horizon: Forbidden West and the next God of War
