American Idol Recap: Season 9 Finale

May 27, 2010

America has voted! Is your new American Idol single mom Crystal Bowersox or paint salesman Lee DeWyze? Find out who triumphs in Kidzworld’s recap of the American Idol Season 9 finale!

Lee Or Crystal?

Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox have been battling it out since the beginning of this competition, but after strong performances from both contestants throughout the competition and with less than 2 percent of the vote separating the two finalists, it’s difficult to guess who came out on top.

On Tuesday Crystal chose “Up To The Mountain” as her favorite song and Lee once again chose to sing “The Boxer.” Crystal seemed like the clear favorite—Simon said Lee sounded a bit nervous, but don’t count Lee out yet!

Wednesday night was a two-hour extravaganza that never seemed to end. The show rolled out performer after performer—and while it was nice to see some old faces, it would’ve been nicer to find out who won!

Adam Lambert's Canceled Performance

Season 8 Idol Kris Allen returned to the stage to remind America why he won out over rival Adam Lambert. Lambert was mysteriously absent from the group of returning Idols, but it was later revealed that his performance was cut at the last minute. Lambert didn’t show up to rehearsal and Idol producers worried he was going to do something outrageous on live TV—so they cut him out.

Bye Bye Simon

Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol after nine amazing seasons. His departure seems like the end of an era. Do you think the show can survive without him? Randy, Kara and Ellen paid tribute to their fellow judge with a hilarious collection of Simon’s best moments that even had Simon cracking a smile. Paula Abdul also returned to give Simon and awkward but heartfelt farewell.

Highlights of the finale included performances by the Bee Gees, Joe Cocker and Alice Cooper, and there was real chemistry between Crystal and her idol, Alanis Morissette. The two sensitive songwriters sang a spirited version of “You Outta Know.”

Janet Jackson got “Nasty” in a skin-tight jumpsuit then performed her new song, “Nothing.” After the traumatic loss of her brother, Michael, it was good to see her back and kicking it onstage.

Idol was definitely all about the ladies last night, especially when the top girls performed “Beautiful” and “Stronger.” Christina Aguilera showed up to join them for the end of “Stronger” and to debut her new song, “You Lost Me.”

And The Winner Is...

But America had cast its votes and last night and it wasn’t a girl that came out on top. Instead, after surviving 19 different cuts, Lee DeWyze, the shy paint salesman from Chicago, Il was the man left standing. Lee scores a recording contract, instant fame and, if he has anything to do with it, a lasting legacy. Congrats Lee!

What Do You Think?

Did Lee deserve to win or should Crystal have taken the crown? Will Idol survive without Simon? Who do you think will replace him on the judge’s panel? Are you miffed about Adam Lambert’s canceled performance? Let us know in the comments!
