Belle of the Ball

After checking on Alaric in the hospital Elena heads home, with Matt wishing her a safe trip (not likely in Mystic Falls!) As she’s backing up her car, she thinks she’s run over something and gets out, and Rebekah, still angry about being daggered, rushes in to attack. Luckily Elijah pries her off Elena just in the nick of time and reminds Rebekah that their newly revived mother Esther (the original witch) has forbidden them from harming people.

When Elena gets home there’s an elegant invite to a ball held by the freshly reunited and undaggered Mikaelson clan, Damon thinks it’s too dangerous for her to go but she says it’s the only way she’ll be able to find out Esther’s plans. When she appears looking lovely at the ball Damon is furious, but she gets Stefan on her side and asks her distract him while she talks to Esther. Stefan cracks Damon’s neck and she goes off to meet with Esther.

Elena and the Salvatore brothers weren’t the only ones to get invites, Caroline receives an invite with a note from Klaus to “save her a dance” and a bejewelled dress in a box. Rebekah also hand delivers an invite to Matt. Half the town turns out in their finest to this ball, including Mayor Lockwood.

A Family Affair

All of Esther’s vampire children have different plans now that they’re out of their coffins, Rebekah and brother Kol  are itching to cause some trouble and decide to kill Matt, but when she lures him outside he kindly puts his jacket around her shoulders and she changes her mind. With Damon out of the way Finn leads Elena to his mother, and she tells Elena about how she loves her children but they are an abomination. She wants to undo the evil she has done and kill Klaus and the others by binding their fates together with a drop of Elena’s blood (which they all drink in a grand toast). Elena agrees, but feels badly as she watches Elijah, potentially their ally (and definitely the most well-behaved of the whole Mikaelson family) drink.

Love is in the Air

When Caroline arrives at the party, wearing the dress and jewellery he sent, Klaus sets about charming her right away, praising her beauty and showing her his art collection – it turns out Klaus is a talented artist himself, with a piece hanging in a famous European gallery. Caroline is still rattled by a heartfelt message she received from Tyler telling her that he’s going to make himself better and come back to her, and gives Klaus a piece of her mind. That doesn't deter Klaus though, when she returns from the ball there's a gift box with a drawing of her with a horse.

Damon corners Elena and wants to force her to leave, he still believes it’s too dangerous for her to be here and he’s livid that Stefan killed him (if only momentarily) to stop him protecting her. Elena tells him his feelings are getting in the way and he blurts out that he loves her, and then admits angrily that he is a liability.

Rebekah may have changed her mind about killing Matt, but Kol still wants to do some damage and lures Matt into shaking his hand and then crushes it. Damon rushes over, throws Kol over the balcony and still upset about Elena telling him his emotions have gotten in the way, beats Kol in front of a crowd. Stefan asks if he’s gone crazy and Damon walks off.

Elena and Stefan have a moment where she tries to find out how he shuts off his emotions, but he refuses to show her his feelings. Rebekah finds Matt in the bar and tries to apologize but he wants nothing to do with her. Damon walks in drunk, tells her to find someone who can handle things better and then they make out!
