Let's Plays Being Flagged On Youtube

Dec 12, 2013

YouTube has been flagging gamer's for use of 3rd party content on videos that previously had been cleared for Let's Plays and monetisization. Have you been affected?

Videos featuring games from Publisher's such as Ubisoft (Rayman: Legends), Capcom (DuckTales), and Blizzard (World Of Warcraft) are among some of those affected so far.

But as it turns out, it's not the Publisher's that are flagging the videos. It's a deeper problem with YouTube and it's method of matching audio with its archives and Ubisoft as well as the other Publishers are asking you to notify them directly if you have been affected and they will help rectify the issue.

Here's a direct statement from Ubisoft - Thanks to IGN

"As you’re probably aware, many YouTubers this week have suddenly been hit with various copyright claims related to in-game audio.  In June last year, Ubisoft set out its policy opening the door for channels to make videos using game content and to monetise bespoke content.

"If you happen to be hit with claims on any of your Ubisoft content, it may be that some of the audio is being auto-matched against the music catalogue on our digital stores - it might show up as being claimed by our distributor ‘idol’. In such cases please take the following steps and we can get it cleared for you.

  • Leave the video live for now.
  • Send us the URL of the affected video and let us know who flagged it.
  • We’ll get it cleared hopefully same day.

"Hope this helps, thanks for all your support over the past year and for all the amazing videos! Look forward to working with you in a very exciting 2014!"

There is no word from YouTube yet if there will be a fix for these flags that being sent out. But for the time being, rest easy knowing that the game Publisher's are on your side if your being flagged for video's in which you have there permission to upload or stream.

Unfortunately for Nintendo fans, Nintendo is still really restrictive on what they allow you to post. It's a shame because Let's Plays of Nintendo games like the Super Mario series are great.
