The Struggle to Switch from Summer Mode to School Mode

Aug 15, 2018

It’s not easy. For many, summer time is the best and you never want it to end. You may resent school straight off the bat simply for that reason, but we’ve all got to put in work. You sort of have to think of school as your job. Any job with benefits permits vacation, and it is a perk, but you always have to return to work. In a sense, you have to earn your next vacation. In your case, it’s probably the sense of freedom you will miss the most. Later nights out, more socializing, doing fun things like camping or taking trips away to spend up at the cabin. Summer certainly is a special time, but sadly all good things have to come to an end. Whether you like it or not, it’s time to get back into school mode.

It's not easy going back to school after summer, but you can do it! It's not easy going back to school after summer, but you can do it!

Here are some reasons why:

  • You care about your GPA and want to crush it at school
  • You get to see people you didn’t over summer that you missed
  • You get to catch-up with people and get filled in on the summer
  • You can re-join your sports team and start playing again
  • You can re-start that school activity that you love
  • You get the opportunity to challenge your mind
  • The ability to meet new students and new people
  • The chance to make new friends from the people you meet
  • Form new hobbies and interests
  • Take advantage of school trips and outings
  • Expand your mind and learn something
  • One step forward to graduating
  • Getting closer and closer to living out your dreams

Going back to school is different for kids and teens.Going back to school is different for kids and teens.

These are only some of the reasons why getting back into school mode is important, but most importantly school is good for your mind. No one can stay in vacation mode forever, eventually, your brain is going to seek a challenge. School is the perfect place for you to do this. If there is a team or a group that you are interested in then go after it. Maximize your school experience and make it work for you. When you eliminate the social element of school (which is hard to do), school is your arena, your playing field, and testing grounds. School helps you figure out what you excel in, what you struggle in and what you might need some help with. School is a perfect place to ground your future and map out your goals.

Some kids really enjoy the concept of learning. Some kids really enjoy the concept of learning.

Of course, this isn’t always easy. If we are being bullied, feeling anxiety, depression, phobias, fears, relationship problems or abuse issues, it does make it hard to focus on school. When other people are giving you a hard time, it can make it hard to concentrate. Social matters do get in the way of education, as many kids and teens care more about their personal problems then they do the once listed on their math homework. Maximizing school to build your dreams isn’t always easy for some when they face a variety of intense problems. In some cases, just getting through school is okay, as we can only do what is in our power.

School allows you to connect with a variety of people.School allows you to connect with a variety of people.

Regardless, if you can exercise your gifts, you should. School can open a window of opportunities for you, even if it will never compare to summer. We’ve established that summer life is not a reality. You can ‘t live at the beach, I mean you can, but we would like to believe that you set higher aspirations for yourself.

School is a great way to stay in touch with your friends. School is a great way to stay in touch with your friends.

Sure, your enthusiasm might not come right off the bat, after summer, but believe it or not, there are kids and teens who state that they miss school. Some people thrive in a scholastic environment, while others simply love learning and the gratification they get from excelling at an element of school.

Some kids hate school, it’s not a choice, but for many pursuing a post-secondary education is not in their interest. People suffer from low attention spans and can’t handle being spoken at for hours. Some people are simply more hands-on and need to be participating. Everyone learns differently, and some people learn better through situations or even their own mistakes.

There are plenty of ways to make school fun. There are plenty of ways to make school fun.

Reasons to embrace school even if you hate it:

  • It will help you get your GED, you can’t get a lot of jobs, especially high-paying ones without that
  • It can open doors for post-secondary education if that interests you
  • You can meet people who will be in your life forever
  • You have the ability to learn something even if it’s not the way you’d like to be taught
  • It’s nice to see something through from start to finish
  • It will provide you with a sense of accomplishment

Try to make the most out of your scholastic experience. Try to make the most out of your scholastic experience.

When you hate school it’s even harder to want to return, but try to think of a few reasons why school is a good thing. Brainstorm why you like school, oppose to telling yourself you hate it. There has to be at least one reason. Focus on that reason, but also give yourself a challenge and try something new at school. Whether it’s a new class or program or pep rally, whatever it may be, embrace something fresh. School isn’t supposed to be fun, but it can be. Do what you can to make the most of it because you’re not going anyplace else anytime soon (at least you shouldn’t be) and you might as well try and make it a positive experience. At the very least there is hopefully someone that you care about at school. Having a support system to get through is always a benefit.
