Jun 02, 2019

Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next installment of our favorite arachnid hero swung into theaters on Tuesday, July 2nd. Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland), Michelle “MJ” Jones (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon) are back facing off against the evil Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in what is sure to be one of the summer’s biggest blockbuster hits.

History of Spider-Man

This is the third reboot of the superhero franchise, with the previous two starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the titular role. Three movies starring Maguire came out in 2002, 2004, and 2007 while Garfield had two in 2012 and 2014. This is the second Spider-Man flick for Holland, but he has also appeared as the character in Captain America: Civil War (2016) Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and 2019’s Avenger’s: Endgame.

The Box Office

Spider-Man: Homecoming was a hit with film critics and movie-goers alike, grossing $334 million domestic (United States) and $546 million internationally. That’s quite a web-full of cash! It’s the tenth highest grossing film in the Marvel-verse and the fourth highest grossing of the Spider-Man movies.

So far the new film has been garnering good reviews and is expected to beat Homecoming in the box office. Far From Home was already been released in theaters last weekend in China, Japan, and Hong Kong where it racked up $111 million.

Catching Up

In Spider-Man: Homecoming we followed Peter as he returns home after participating in the Battle of New York with the Avengers, where he gets the bug (pun intended!) for fighting crime." for fighting crime. His best friend Ned discovers his secret identity and the boys get mixed up in trying to prevent weapons trades. Peter tries to balance normal high school activities like dances, his feelings for his friend Liz, and participation in the decathlon team, but as always it gets complicated… it turns out Liz’s dad is the arms dealer/villain Peter has been fighting as Spider-Man.

As far as the timeline for the new movie goes, it settles into Peter Parker’s life after the events of Avengers: Endgame. The whole Avengers team had time (travel) on their side in order to defeat Thanos and restore all the people who had been wiped out from Earth by The Snap. Looks like Peter won’t get long to catch his breath and get back to a normal life of school and friends before needing to save the world once again.
