1Hey Coach,
How do I make a triple play in softball? I've made a double play but I want to make a triple play? What's the best way to do it?

Hey jakerea

Triple plays in softball and baseball are pretty rare and it's tough to say what the "best way" to do it is. Most players go their entire softball-playing lives without ever being part of a triple play. That's because in order to turn a triple play, there needs to be at least two runners already on base - and there is usually only enough time for fielders to record a double-play at best under most circumstances. Triple plays often happen with runners on first and second. A batter may hit a quick liner to the thirdbaseman, who'll touch third base for the first out, before throwing the ball to second base for the second out. The second baseman will in turn throw the ball to first for the third out. For this to happen, the fielders must be extremely quick, have near-perfect throws and hope the baserunners are a little bit slow.

If you're trying to pull off an unassisted triple play, don't hold your breath. They're about as common as Chicago Cubs' playoff appearances. Unassisted triple plays virtually always happen when a batter lines out and two baserunners are running on a pitch. A fielder catches a line drive for one out, stepping on base to double off a runner for a second out and then tagging a second runner on the way to the next base for the third out. So, don't be upset if you don't find yourself involved in a triple-play. They're very uncommon and rely on circumstances that are beyond your control.
