The best games offered up by Nintendo this year.

Dec 17, 2018

By: Max Cannon

We're coming to the end of the Nintendo Switch's 2nd year on the market, While things started out awesomely with the 1st year giving us a new entry in both the Legend of Zelda series and 3D Mario series, the 2nd year primarily focused on some awesome re-releases. Read on to see our list of the best Nintendo Switch games released in 2018.

3. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu!

While older gamers may have fond memories of playing the original Pokémon on Game Boy, not everyone has gotten a chance to explore that original map and collection of creatures. This year's Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee! brings that first game to a modern console. With some slight changes from the mobile sensation Pokémon Go thrown into the game, this is the best time to play your first Pokémon game. The only real challenge here is deciding between the Pikachu and Eevee version of the game."

"Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! is a perfect Pokémon game for any kid looking to try out Pokémon for this first time. While those gamers who are more closely familiar with the game may find the journey a little too easy, the simplicity makes it an accessible entry into one of gaming's most popular franchises. Just be cautious if you're looking to pick up the Poké Ball Plus with your copy of the game."  Check out the full review here!

2. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

This year's Pokémon game was more of a remake/reimagining of those first games but Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is essentially just a re-release of the underappreciated Wii U game with one small, but significant change. Tropical Freeze is known as a tough game but the Switch version's inclusion of Funky Mode makes things a little easier and a little more accessible for those of us who may need a little help. If you're a purist still looking for a challenge then Tropical Freeze will deliver some pure platforming goodness.

"If you missed out on Tropical Freeze during the Wii U era then you should absolutely add this rerelease to your Switch library... Retro Studios and Nintendo have done it again. Another great platformer built on a classic and long-running franchise. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze deserves to be in your collection. But be prepared for a challenge." Check out the full review here.

1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Even before it was released it was obvious that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was going to be essential for anyone's personal Switch library and we were more than pleased to see that the game truly delivered. If you're looking for a fighting game that anyone can enjoy then you'll find plenty of fun in Smash and if you're looking for a truly competitive experience then you'll be in luck too.

"While the single-player story won't be for everyone, each player can likely find something to love in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This is undoubtedly the best game in the series and an unmatched multiplayer experience. An instant classic and a game that should always be loaded on your Switch." Check out the full review here.
