Super Mario Bros. 2 and Kirby's Adventure Come to Nintendo Switch

A pair of awesome games are coming to the NES library on Switch.

If you're subscribed to the Switch's online service, then you'll get access to a handful of classic games from the original Nintendo Entertainment System. While some of the obvious games have been added to the library in the past -- like Zelda, the first Super Mario Bros, and Metroid -- Nintendo has thrown in a pair of underappreciated classics that are welcome additions to the library.

The Story of Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 releasing outside of Japan is a classic story of Nintendo/Mario history. After the insane success of the original Super Mario Bros, Nintendo was hard at work on a sequel before thinking that this game would be far too hard for overseas audiences. So Nintendo released that game to the Japanese audience and took another game, Doki Doki Panic, and swapped out the title's characters for Mario characters and called it Super Mario Bros 2 in North America. So the game we know as Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't the real Super Mario Bros 2, North Americans got to play the Japanese version when it was called Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels -- and believe me that the game truly is a tough challenge.

Super Mario Bros 2 is when Mario's appearance and characters really began to take shape. Luigi became a more distinct playable character, rather than just Mario in a different color, with his higher jumps and slippery run. Toad and Princess Toadstool also joined in as playable characters with Toad focusing on speed and strength and the Princess's ability to fly which makes the game much easier. It's different than many of the other Mario games in the series so it is definitely worth checking out.

Kirby's Very Pretty Adventure

What makes Kirby's Adventure so awesome is the great music, visuals, and variety in locations. This is a reasonably short game but there are so many different sights to see and moves to perform. Oddly enough, a great selling point for this game is how easy it is to play. Most NES games are incredibly tough to play through, especially by today's standards, so having access to one that's pretty, easy, and short makes this one of the best options on the Switch's NES library. Of course, that prettiness is subjective and you'll want to remember that Kirby's Adventure came out about 25 years ago. If you're completely new to Kirby then this is a fantastic time to jump in.

However, many would argue that Kirby's best game released on the SNES with Kirby Superstar Deluxe. But maybe we could one day see that game on the Switch as well, as rumors are circulating about Nintendo possibly adding SNES games onto the Switch's library at some point. We'll have to keep our eyes and ears open for that news, whenever it comes, and it's most likely that we could hear a little something during 2019's E3 event.
