Zelda Prequel Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Announced!

Takes place 100 years before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Sep 08, 2020

Nintendo announced an unexpected, but most welcome game heading to the Nintendo Switch this November! Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity brings the large scale combat of the “Warriors” games started by Dynasty Warriors once again into Hyrule. The last Hyrule Warriors game felt more like a love letter to the Zelda series, but this one aims to establish itself as the prequel to Breath of the Wild complete with that game’s art style, characters, and story.

The Prequel to Breath of the Wild

During the story of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you get a glimpse of what happened 100 years before Link awakens with his memory gone, and his mission to rescue Princess Zelda placed onto him. Hyrule is in ruins from the devastating war against Calamity Ganon that plunged the kingdom into darkness, the heroic champions are gone, and civilization lies in ruins. Age of Calamity shows us that story, where the kingdom is digging in for their last desperate stand against Ganon in a massive battle to determine the fate of Hyrule itself. Since we know what happens in the end, it is going to be really interesting to see what led to the Champions’ defeat, and Ganon’s victory. The game features a bunch of new cutscenes to sell the story and the huge conflict that is taking place and should expand on the relationship between Link, Zelda, and the other Champions in their darkest hour.

Playable Champions and Huge Battles

Like the other Warriors games, in addition to playing as Link, Age of Calamity lets you control both Zelda and the other Champions. Each will control very differently, with each character's race playing a huge role in how they battle the hundreds of enemies on screen. These games are known for their crazy large scale. You can be going up against so many enemies at once, that whole armies will fall before you. There is still room for mastery though since every character plays so differently. Zelda uses magic attacks, Daruk of the Gorons devastates enemies with his might, Revali soars around his foes and attacks with his signature bow, Urbosa channels the strength of the Gerudo’s curved weapons, and Mipha harnesses her trident to control the waters. The game also has local co-op, where you and a friend can share the switch’s two Joy-Cons to hack and slash your way through the hordes of iconic enemies in your way. Much of Breath of the Wild’s cast of monsters are returning, from the smallest Bokoblin to the mightiest Lynel beast. Its the biggest display of good vs evil that the Zelda series has seen, and with more weight than ever since it ties directly into Breath of the Wild and its upcoming sequel, which was revealed to still be quite a long ways off. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is coming out on November 20th, 2020!
