Sonic: Lost World: WiiU & 3DS Game Preview

Sep 11, 2013

It's been a while since our favorite hedgehog had a truly solid adventure with Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations being the later, better efforts but even those were years ago now. Chin up Sonic fans, Sega seems poised to bring Sonic's platforming back in style, exclusively on Nintendo WiiU and 3DS, with Sonic:Lost World.

So...What's Sonic: Lost World all about?

Speed And Precision

Those two above words have rarely fit together when describing Sonic's past 3D adventures. Once you got speeding up to "ludicrous speed" it was tough to maneuver environments as gracefully as you could in Sonic's 2D iterations. Sonic Team, the games developers, may have found a solution. For the first time in a Sonic game, Sonic has three levels of speed that are easily manipulated. Push up on the analog stick and Sonic walks, hold one of the triggers down and he'll run and if you hold both triggers down at the same time, Sonic rolls into his ball form for top-gear speeds.

The developers have even implemented a parkour system that automatically vaults Sonic over certain objects to keep the flow and momentum moving forward. Hitting walls just as you get up to full speed is a frustration many Sonic fans know. This elegant solution could be the trick to keep us moving at super sonic speeds.

Sonic Galaxy

One of the first things that catches your eye about this game before anything else is the insane, abstract level designs. Each level retains many of the iconic colors and texture patterns from Sonic's rich history, but now instead of being presented in a some what more grounded way (comparatively), Sonic is speeding around 360 degrees of Super Mario Galaxy inspired levels. Each looking more unique than the last. If you're going to look to other games for inspiration, you better be looking to the best and that's exactly what Sonic Team seems to be doing.
