New Smash Bros. Character Announced: Byleth from Fire Emblem and More

The final character set to release in the Fighter Pass has been unveiled.

Jan 21, 2020

We finally know who the final character of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Fighters Pass will be. Fans had tons of theories on who the new character would be, and it is safe to say basically everyone was wrong. The newest character is Byleth, the main character of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Byleth is the 8th Fire Emblem character to make an appearance on the roster, following Marth, Roy, Ike, Robin, Lucina, Corrin, and Chrom.

Byleth

Byleth is a professor at the Officer’s Academy in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. You can pick whether Byleth is male or female, and both options are available in Smash. Byleth isn’t just another sword wielder, though. The primary weapon is the Sword of the Creator, but he/she uses the Hero’s Relics that are tied to their directional attacks as well to shake things up. The Sword also transforms into a whip for some moves, making it even more unique. Byleth’s bow and lance give them some ranged attack, and the axe punishes anyone who gets too close. As for keeping with tradition, with new fighters also bringing in new stages to battle in, Byleth comes with one from the Gerreg Mach Monastery, the place where Byleth trains their students. New music tracks round out the deal, adding to Smash Ultimate’s already huge library of music to enjoy.

Mii Fighters: Cuphead, Megaman, Assassin’s Creed, and Rabbids

The new fighter wasn’t the only new addition announced, however. In addition to the new fighters, the Fighters Pass has also added some famous costumes for the playable Mii characters. This time around, Altair from the first Assassin’s Creed, and the Rabbids add a bit of Ubisoft flair to the game. More exciting though, are the costumes that turn your Miis into Mega Man X, MegaMan.EXE from the Battle Network series, and most of all the platformer hero Cuphead. Cuphead would have been awesome to see as a fighter in his own right, but any appearance is welcome as Cuphead is one of the most endearing games of the last few years for sure.

Fighters Pass Volume 2

If the 5 new characters in the first Pass aren’t enough, another set of 6 new characters are on the way. Game director Sakurai has announced a second Fighters Pass with 6 new characters that will keep the game going even longer. All the new fighters will hit the game before 2022 and is available to prepurchase January 28th, 2020. There are zero hints as to who the new bunch will be, and with Byleth’s announcement shocking everyone online, all bets and guesses are off for this. If Smash Ultimate wants to end up being a hall of fame for video game characters, here is hoping that Nintendo picked the last group well. Either way, more characters dropping over the next couple years is a great thing and will go a long way toward keeping the game alive longer, even though Smash Bros rarely needs that help.
