Zelda is Coming to Super Mario Maker 2!

New items, enemies, and all-star power-ups coming to Mario Maker soon

Dec 04, 2019

If the thousands of levels currently begging to be completed in Super Mario Maker 2 isn’t enough, a new update is coming on December, 5th that is sure to shake things up! From new enemies, items, and a special surprise for Legend of Zelda fans, here is everything that is coming to the game!

Super Mario Maker 2 - A Legendary Update

Spike

Now, level builders will be able to place down a few new devious traps to make their levels even more dangerous, or not. The Spike enemy waddles around the level, shooting big spiked spheres out at Mario that can be both an obstacle and an advantage. It can be used to activate “?” blocks from a distance, burst through breakable blocks, and more. It won’t take long for creative builders to put this new trick to the test. Like with most of the new additions, the theme of the level changes how the spike looks, and in snow levels, the spike will turn into a snowball!

Pokey

You might recognize this enemy from any number of Super Mario games throughout the years, but in Mario Maker 2 it can be an extra tall challenge. You can even give it wings to hone in on Mario. You can defeat it with fireballs, Yoshi, and I’m sure whatever other creative solutions you can come up with. Just like Spike, Pokey’s look changes between level types, with snow levels turning Pokey into a snowman or snow-Pokey.

Frozen Coin

If getting coins is just too easy for you, try placing some frozen coins. You can melt through the ice with fireballs or fire-type enemies, but it is another item that can be used in really creative ways by the right builder.

P-Block

The P-Block has a lot of potential when making levels. It is a surface that only activates when you push a specific button. You can use it to make platforms, obstacles, or whatever you can come up with.

Dash Block

In the New Super Mario Bros. levels, you can put down a Dash Block to reach high speeds quickly. They make you jump extra far, and you can also use it with the Koopa Troopa car to zoom across the level with ease.

The Master Sword

By far the biggest addition with this update is the Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda. It is a powerup that turns Mario into Link complete with a bunch of his famous items and abilities. It can only be used in the original Super Mario Bros game mode, but it comes with a heap of features. When Mario has the sword, he can use the basic sword strike to slash enemies, deflect damage with the shield, and blow through a row of enemies with the dash attack. Smash Bros fans might recognize the down-thrust, which can make short work of nearly any foe. He has a bow and arrow that he can fire straight across, up, and down to hit hard to reach blocks or enemies. If that isn’t enough, he can blow up blocks or enemies with his bombs. Having so many more abilities at your disposal is going to make levels possible that never could have been made with just Mario.

Ninji Speedruns

For fans of completing levels as fast as possible, Ninji Speedruns let you challenge your friends in some of Nintendo’s pre-made levels that are optimized for speed. The fastest players can unlock exclusive rewards for their Mii characters. New courses and challenges will be added over time to keep you coming back to get faster times.
