The Secret of the Magic Gourd DVD Review

Raymond is a dreamy, lazy boy who never wants to work. He’s been slacking off at school and his group is starting to hate him because they always have to pick up his slack. One day, during an afternoon of fishing at the lake, Raymond catches a wish-granting, smooth-talking gourd. Corbin Bleu provides his voice! If Raymond keeps the gourd a secret, the gourd will grant his every wish! Since Raymond couldn’t catch anything, Bailey the gourd magically lifts all the fish out of the lake and lets Raymond pick his favorites! Then, when Raymond gets hungry, Bailey transforms the fish into burgers, ice cream and fries!

Magic Misfortune

Raymond has to make a project for school, so the gourd designs him a wicked robot, but because he’s so lazy all the time, no one believes he made it! And when Raymond doesn’t study for his math test, the gourd helps him out—but his help just gets Raymond into more trouble. The worst is when Raymond wants to see a sold-out dinosaur movie. The gourd puts him right inside the movie—up close and personal with a t-rex! Raymond has to learn that short cuts never work and hard work and perserverence are the only way to get the job done right.

DVD Extras

The Games and Activities section is disappointing because it only contains one game. It’s up to you to help Raymond get ten toys out of his room before his father gets home. The blooper reel is pretty funny because you get more footage of the gourd acting silly and the Backstage Disney section features a music video and a behind the scenes look at the making of the movie. The Secret of the Magic Gourd is based on a classic Chinese fairy tale and is Disney’s first Chinese co-production.
