April 2012 Sports Preview

Apr 02, 2012

April is a great month for sports. The NHL and NBA seasons are both coming to an end and everyone is excited for the playoffs. Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer seasons have just started and everyone is excited for the sun to come around so we can all spend a lazy Sunday afternoon at the ball game.  Let’s check out this month’s sports preview…

Victorious Vancouver

The Vancouver Canucks have leaped back into the top spot in the NHL! With only a few more games left in the season, it looks like the Canucks will win their second President’s Trophy (the trophy that goes to the team that wins the most points during the regular season) and that will give them home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Canucks are currently tied with the New York Rangers for the top spot and only one point ahead of the St. Louis Blues, but Vancouver’s schedule is fairly easier than both the Rangers and the Blues as they will only be playing teams not capable of making the playoffs, while the Blues and Rangers must face all playoff caliber teams.

NBA Showdown

The NBA is showing the promise of one of the most exciting playoff tournaments in history as it’s anyone’s guess to who will be crowned the next champion. While everyone has been talking about Lebron James having the best year of his career, it sure looks like Lebron and the Miami Heat will have many obstacles in their path. Here are Kidzworld’s top 10 picks to win the NBA championship his year:

  1. Kevin Durant and the OKC Thunder
  2. Lebron, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and the Miami Heat
  3. Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers
  4. Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls
  5. Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics
  6. Tony Parker and the San Antonio Spurs
  7. Chris Paul and Blake Griffin and the LA Clippers
  8. Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic
  9. Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks
  10. Carmello Anthony and the New York Knicks (Cinderella)

If baseball is your game, the regular season has already begun with a couple of games that were played in Tokyo, Japan between the Oakland Athletics and the Seattle Mariners. A little coincidence is that Japanese fan favorite Ichiro Suzuki hit 4 for 5 in their win. April 4thmarks the official opening day for the rest of the Major League teams.

Finally, the Major League Soccer season is already in full flight and it’s the Kansas City Wiz with a magical 4 wins in a row to start their season as the top team to beat. It’s the best start to a season in Sporting KC’s 17-year history and they’ve already outscored their opponents 7-1.
