Check out Kidzworlds movie review of Disney’s Big Hero 6. Is this superhero film super? Are you going to love Baymax? We’ll give you the scoop!

By: Jenna Busch

Big Hero 6 is the latest animated film from Disney, and the first to be based on a Marvel comic. Haven’t heard of it? That’s not surprising. The Big Hero 6 comic doesn’t have very much to do with the film. No need to go out and read it.

Here’s the deal

A fourteen-year-old genius named Hiro graduated high school early. He spends his days creating robots and fighting them illegally in alleys. His big brother Tadashi, meanwhile, is busy studying robotics in college. He convinces Hiro to give up his slacking and join Tadashi’s friends, creating super cool robots, including “micro-bots.” Unfortunately, something terrible happens and Hiro is devastated. His brother’s friends rally around him, trying to cheer him up, but nothing works. That is, until Hiro finds Tadashi’s squishy robot creation Baymax. After Hiro’s micro-bots are stolen, he and Baymax get the group together and form a superhero team to get them back.

San Fransokyo is so pretty

The film is set in the fictional city of San Fransokyo (a mix of San Francisco and Tokyo), which is one of the coolest settings we’ve ever seen. In fact, the entire film is absolutely beautiful. You’ve never seen anything like this in animation. You’ll have to watch the film a few times to get all the incredible detail that was thrown in here. (Comic book fans are going to spot some amazing Marvel Easter eggs.) Some of the action scenes will leave you with your mouth hanging open, especially the one where Hiro and Baymax learn to fly.

You’re going to want to hug Baymax

They story itself starts off pretty heartbreaking, though the death of family members in Disney films is pretty standard. However, the sadness (seriously, bring tissues) sets up the meeting between Hiro and Baymax.

Oh, Baymax. You’re going to love him. He’s a soft robot, created as a non-threatening nurse, and all he wants to do is help people. Guys, soft robotics is really a thing, and the filmmakers spent a lot of time researching it. He’s also really, really funny. The scene where his battery starts to fail and he deflates is absolutely hysterical. Keep an eye out for the kitty scene. Even when Hiro upgrades him with some butt-kicking moves and armor, he remains sweet as can be.

Big Hero 6 is all about the team

The rest of the team is pretty great as well. They’re not what you’d expect from a band of superheroes. They’re a bunch of robotics engineers who really love their friend and are willing to do anything they can to help him. The superhero outfits and weapons they come up with will make you want to study science extra hard. In fact, one of the best things about the film is that it makes science cool.  This one is definitely worth a watch on the big screen.
