The Bottom Line

Disney truly had a stroke of luck, or genius, turning the life story of the fairytale villainess Maleficent into a live-action film - in fact, not only was Angelina Jolie praised for the film, but it's her highest grossing film to date. It's a well-crafted take on the fairytale, giving us some back story as to why Maleficent would put a curse on a newborn child, and managaes to make us feel empathy for her. Her childhood friendship with the future King is torn apart by politics, and the savage destruction of her fairy wings might even bring a tear to your eye!

Maleficent is a great family film, the fairytale itself is timeless, as is the Disney animated classic - so releasing it just before the biggest family holidays hit is a great idea. The beautiful scenery and bright colors in the fairytale film look better than ever in Blu-ray, and even the sound quality will put you right in the film - for example in the scene where Maleficent is surrounded by the King's men with iron, the sound of them pounding on their shields will make you feel as if you're on the field with them! It comes with standard bonus material if you want to get behind-the-scenes, but overall the film speaks for itself.

Maleficent is a great addition to your collection for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas season, when you're all huddled inside this winter, you won't regret putting it on for the whole family.
