Check out Kidzworld’s review of the family comedy Daddy’s Home 2 on Blu-ray. Is it as silly/fun as the first? Are the extras worth watching?

By: Lynn Barker

In Daddy’s Home 2, kindly/wimpy stepdad Brad (Will Ferrell) and macho dad Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) have gotten their co-dad act together and everything is mostly going smoothly until, suddenly Brad’s wacky dad Don (John Lithgow) and Dusty’s playboy/ex-astronaut dad Kurt (Mel Gibson) both arrive for the holidays. When Kurt suggests they all spend Christmas together in the mountains in a posh “cabin”, are the holidaze doomed?

Co-Dad Heaven?

Co-dadship is going well. Dusty and Brad act like BFFs who do bake sales with their kids and hang out. When Dusty’s playboy dad Kurt comes for the holidays as does Brad’s polar-opposite dad Don, disaster is on the horizon. The kids complain that they are shuttled back and forth too much and want to spend holidays together in one place. Kurt, who seems bent on getting Brad and his son Dusty on the outs again, books a fancy giant cabin in the mountains so they all can spend Christmas together.

In the Mountains

At the fancy chalet, Kurt wants Dusty to stop agreeing with Brad and “man up”. Brad loses control of a snow blower that then eats all the Christmas decorations. The guys chop down a Christmas tree only to discover it’s one of those fake cellphone towers. Kurt wants tween Dylan (Owen Vaccaro) to become a hunter and buys him a gun but it is young sis Megan (Scarlett Estevez) who is the crack shot. Dylan is crushing on the girl next door. While Brad tells him he’s better off in the “friend zone”, Kurt tells him to just go kiss the girl he’s hot for. When he kisses wild child step-sister Adriana (Didi Costine), everyone is shocked.

Split Up

Finally, it is revealed that Don has split up with Brad’s mom. Brad doesn’t take it well. The kids get blasted on egg nog and the whole family messes up a public manger scene. Mom Sarah (Linda Cardellini) learns that Dusty’s wife Karen (Alesandra Ambrosio) is a shoplifter. Things disintegrate so much that everyone leaves in separate cars on Christmas day. This includes Adriana’s tough guy dad Roger (John Cena) who has shown up. Due to an avalanche, the roads are closed and everyone ends up at the movies. When the power goes off, they have to realize this is where they are spending Christmas Day. Can they all get along after all?

Special Extra Features

  • Making a Sequel covers the filmmakers’ decision to make the second film about the co-dad relationship. What could be better than adding more dads? So, the Don and Kurt grandfather characters were created.
  • Look Who’s Back – the returning actors from the first film talk about how chummy and comfortable they were to come back, how their characters have changed and how the new cast members blended in well. Everyone loves John Cena’s character.

  • Co-Dads: Will and Mark –the actors talk about their changing relationship as they get used to sharing their kids.
  • The New Dads in Town: Mel and John – What the two classic actors bring to the mix is discussed by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow. Lithgow reveals that he took the part because his character was called “Pop-pop” by the kids. This is what his grandkids call him in real life.
  • Captain Sully –The real American hero pilot who saved his planeload of passengers is added to the cast in a surprise ending scene. His addition to the cast is discussed and we see him on set.
  • Deleted/Extended/Alternate Scenes – There are six scenes and some are quite funny.
  • Gag Reel – the usual bloopers, line flubs and silliness.

Wrapping Up

Daddy’s Home 2 is funny enough with Will Ferrell doing crazy physical stunts and veteran actors Mel Gibson and John Lithgow hamming it up as polar-opposite dads. The adult females in the cast have little to do and that’s a shame. The diverse family does finally have a happy, if bizarre Christmas so this might all be your cup of tea.

Extras are mostly “look how cool the cast is and how well we all get along” hype but if these actors are some of your faves, the extra features might be fun.

As we did for the film in theaters, we go three stars.
