Johnny English Movie Review
Courtesy of Universal PicturesCan't get enough of those accidental agent movies like
Spy Kids and
Cody Banks? Johnny English will cure you of all that.
Johnny English is Mostly Painful
On TV,
Rowan Atkinson is great in small
Mr. Bean/Black Adder-size doses. And, on the big screen he rules as supporting characters in movies like the Lion King and
Scooby-Doo (where he was totally wasted.) But as the
Austin Powers wannabe,
Johnny English, Rowan falls flat - a lot. The blame can't all be stacked on the shoulders of the slightly scrawny spy, though. After all, a good movie has to have a good story and Johnny English doesn't. Written by the team who penned the last two James Bond movies,
Die Another Day and
The World Is Not Enough, this very, very
unfunny flick is a middle-aged version of
The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Johnny English Surprises
Johnny English is so bad, I'm surprised
Eddie Murphy isn't in it! What is a surprise is John Malkovich as nasty guy Pascal Sauvage. Mr. Malkovich is a great actor. How many actors have starred in a movie about themselves (Being John Malkovich?) Why is he in this movie? Why is singer
Natalie Imbruglia in Johnny English? Did they owe someone a big favor?
Johnny English - The Bottom Line
If you like
Austin Powers, you may giggle at Johnny English. But if all that slap-schtick leaves you cold, stay away. Stay far away!
