Baseball :: The Little League World Series

Aug 29, 2010

The Little League World Series was played this weekend in South Williamsport Pennsylvania. It was pretty lob-sided as Hawaii destroyed Texas 10-0 in the American final, but then Japan knocked them out in the final 4-1.

USA’s Streak Stops

The Little League World Series is probably the biggest event in the World for kids aged 11-13. There is one tournament for all the American teams who start all the way from their own little town. The other tournament is an International bracket of all the best countries. Sunday, the champs of the US tourney, Hawaii, played the International champs Japan, but Japan snapped the US 5-year World Series Streak as champs.

Cinderella Stories

For both Hawaii and Japan it was a Cinderella story for both teams to make it to the finals. Hawaii was a small town team that beat the heavily favored Texans and Japan beat another Goliath team Chinese Taipei who had previously crushed their opponents 46-1. Chinese Taipei went on to annihilate Texas in the 3rd place game 14-2.

Tournament Tips

There may be a good reason why the USA has the most championship victories with 32 titles since the tourney started in 1946… they get to be in the final every year. Why do all the other countries have to play a separate tournament to meet the USA in the finals? The tournament shouldn’t be called the World Series, but it should be called “Who get to play the US Series?” The Americans may be the best players in the World for Baseball, but I think US champs should play the final tournament from the beginning with all the other countries instead of a free pass to the final.
