Mirwais :: The Electronica Trendsetter

Dec 27, 2006

You may not know who Mirwais is but you've probably heard his work. He's one of the hottest dance music trendsetters around. Mirwais is responsible for producing most of Madonna's CD Music.The material girl was so impressed with Mirwais' single Disco Science that she wanted him to produce her CD. She knows a good thing when she hears it. Mirwais loved working with Madonna and said, "She is more talented than you'd expect, because she doesn't make it known that she's really talented in the studio. Working with her... was a really good relationship. I think, to be honest, the only thing that is important in her professional life is music... I'm sure of that."

Obviously the feeling is mutual. In an interview with Billboard, Madonna stated "I truly believe that this man is a genius... I listen to his stuff and I think, this is the future of sound."

Mirwais is one of the leaders of the dance music scene in France - and European countries set the vibe for the rest of the world. The talented producer, composer and one-man band was born in Switzerland. When he was six his family moved to Paris and he became very interested in music. He learned to play the guitar before he was a teenager and a few years later he started his own band. The band was called Taxi Girl and they played a mix of disco, electronica and punk music. Taxi Girl had one album in 1981 called Seppuku. The band split after being together for eight years and Mirwais went on to form a pop-folk group with his girlfriend. They called their band Juliette et les Independants.

When Mirwais was later introduced to drum and bass music he returned to his love of electronic music. In 1999 he released a single called Disco Science. The song became a big hit on the French club circuit. It showed up later on his full CD called Production in 2000. Production is a mix of 70's synthesizers, disco beats, acoustic guitars and even telephone blips and bleeps.

Mirwais did an amazing job on Madonna's Music. Ever notice that whatever Madonna touches turns to gold? I think it's just a matter of time before Mirwais is producing the likes of other major pop stars. If you haven't heard his latest CD Production give it a spin. Your CD player will thank you.
