    Barenaked Ladies Get Their Start

Back in the day this group got a ton of flack over their name Barenaked Ladies. Although there are no ladies in the group, Barenaked Men just didn't have the same ring. They picked the name simply to draw attention. The Canadian band was formed in 1988 at summer camp when buds Steven Page and Ed Robertson realized they liked singing together. Hmm... I wonder if they were singing Kumbaya? The two guys spent months opening for a comedy group and decided to expand the Barenaked Ladies by adding their high school classmates, Jim (bass) and Andrew Creeggan (keyboards)- Yeah, they're brothers. Tyler Stewart soon joined and the band was complete.

    Barenaked Ladies Big Break

After a couple of independent releases and a strong word-of-mouth about their live shows, the Barenaked Ladies signed to Sire/Reprise in 1992. It wasn't long until their album Gordon came out and people were introduced to the Barenaked Ladies quirky lyrics, great acoustics and funny videos. Songs like If I had a Million Dollars became big hits in Canada. Soon after the release, the guys lost Andrew who decided to go back to college and Kevin Hearn took over the keys.

The Barenaked Ladies' Rocky Road To Success

Things took a turn for the worst in 1998 when Kevin Hearn was diagnosed with leukemia. He had to take 18 months away from the band for cancer treatment. In the meantime he was temporarily replaced, but was back with the band and ready to rock when his treatments were finished. The release of Stunt in 1998 came a whole new level of success - even in the US. Catchy songs like One Week and It's All Been Done helped pump album sales to double-platinum in the States. The Barenaked Ladies album, Everything To Everyone, is due October 21, 2003.

Barenaked Ladies - Did U Know?
  • Former 90210'er and fellow Canadian Jason Priestly made a documnetary on the Barenaked Ladies and directed one of their videos.
  • Tyler Stewart was Super Dave Osborne's personal assistant.
  • When Andrew and Jim Creeggan were kids they beat Alanis Morissette in the Canadian National Rising Star talent contest.

    Barenaked Ladies Say...
"We do crack ourselves up--that's why we have fun shows. We share the same warped sense of humor. It's fun, but it has also helped us deal with some pretty stressful situations in the past."
