Despite issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, he was still a racist, white supremacist. During a speech at one of his debates with Stephen Douglas in 1858, he said this: "I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of ------s, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

Yeah, you can look up the whole speech online. It was in Charleston, Illinois. September 18th. The year is in the first post.

You all seem shocked to find this out look at the time period of when he was in office. I mean i dont like racism but it wasnt uncommon for people in office to say this kind of stuff at this time in history when having slaves seemed normal for the southerners. Me personally i am not shocked by this because alot of politicians had this opinion so yeah.

I think their shock comes from history books mainly only telling kids that Lincoln "freed the slaves." From what I've seen, they rarely ever delve into his actual opinions, so this leaves kids believing that Lincoln was this outstanding hero, unaffected by the racism he was surrounded with.

First off Lincoln never intended to even free the slaves he simply wanted to stop the spread of slavery to the west. Second off he wasn't the only one Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both signed the Constitution claiming everyone is created equal and so on yet they both were slave holders the largest slave holders to be exact so just dishing it on Lincoln isn't entirely true theres more than just hi.

Well that is kind of true for the fact look at our govt. its divided amongst it self and look how bad it is now full of lies and disarray so its not in a sense *standing* due to the fact that it is divided no one can make a single decision that doesn't have to be voted on and do more bad than good.
