Tiger's real first name is
Eldrick. He was born on December 30, 1975 and grew up in
Cypress, California. A young
Tiger began taking an interest in golf when he was just six months old. He would watch his father,
Earl, hit
golf balls into a net and would try imitating his swing. He was given the nickname
Tiger after a Vietnamese soldier and friend of his father, to whom his father had also given that nickname.
Tiger Woods appeared on
television practicing his swing at the age of two and by the time he was three, he had already shot a 48 on a nine-hole course. When he was just five, the golf world began to take notice of Tiger Woods and he was featured on the cover of Golf Digest.

Tiger Woods was just 16 and still in high school when he played in his first
professional golf tournament - the
Nissan Los Angeles Open. Two years later, he went to college at
Stanford University where he won ten collegiate events and the
NCAA title. While he appeared in only a handful of professional tournaments during his years in college, it wouldn't be long before
Tiger Woods would be winning pro events at a ridiculous rate.

Tiger Woods turned pro in the summer of 1996 at the age of 20 and won two tournaments in his first season on the
PGA tour. The following year,
Tiger Woods won four tournaments and became the
youngest golfer to win
the Masters. He was also selected as the
1997 PGA Player of the Year. Since turning pro,
Tiger Woods has devoured just about every competition he's entered. He's won nearly 60 tournaments, including four
Masters, two
PGA Championships, two
US Opens and two
British Opens. He's also won nearly
$50 million in prize money and he's still only 29 years old!
Tiger Woods lost his number one spot in the world golf rankings in September 2004 and was briefly ranked third in the world behind
Ernie Els and
V.J. Singh. But his playoff victory at the
2005 Masters and a convincing victory at the
2005 British Open has placed him firmly on top of the golf world's rankings once again.

On October 5, 2004, Tiger Woods got married to his long-time girlfriend, Swedish bombshell, Elin Nordegren. The pair tied the knot at a lavish wedding ceremony in Barbados.
