A point guard's job in the NBA, WNBA or any other basketball league is to be a team's on-court leader and control the flow of his team's offence. A point guard brings the ball upcourt and directs the offence to get the ball to other teammates who are in the best position to score. A point guard needs to decide when to run a fast-break and when to slow down and run a half-court offence. A good point-guard can completely turn a team around, as Jason Kidd did when he joined the New Jersey Nets in 2001. In 2004, point guard Steve Nash's leadership at the point guard position has helped turn the Phoenix Suns into one of the most exciting teams in the NBA.

NBA Point Guards - Quick Hands, Quick Wits

A team's point guard is usually smaller, quick and the team's best ball handler. He must be able to make split-second descisions to dump the basketball to an open teammate who has a hot hand or look for an opening to take the ball to the hoop himself. A good point guard in the NBA should have a low assist to turnover ratio, which means he sets up a teammate for a basket a lot more than he loses the ball or has one of his passes picked off.

Best Point Guards In The NBA

Jason Kidd - great passer who is able to find open teammates with clever, no-look passes. He knows when to start a fast break and when to slow things down. He makes his teammates better and helped turn New Jersey into a playoff contender.

Steve Nash - he has bad hair, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the best on-court leaders in the NBA. Nash is one of the league's leaders in assists and his wild style of play makes him a tough player to defend. His arrival in Phoenix has made the Suns a new powerhouse in the Western Conference.

Brevin Knight - a good player on a crappy team. As one of the few bright spots on the Charlotte Bobcats, Knight is great at protecting the ball and controlling the offence.

Stephon Marbury - he's more fond of taking the ball to the rack himself, than dishing off to a teammates, but he's very quick and is a master at creating offence. He has a reputation for being a bit of a ball hog and still turns over the ball way too much.

Mike Bibby - Bibby isn't the most flashy point guard in the league, but he's very reliable. He's very quick, doesn't turnover the ball a lot and has done an outstanding job of bringing balance to Sacramento's high-octance offence.
