The Mummy Returns... Again

Since it began in 1999, the Mummy franchise has been known for its over-the-top special effects and imaginative, if not totally unbelievable story lines. In this installment, archaeologist Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) has taken some time off from adventuring since defeating the Scorpion King. He and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello)are living in an English mansion, but because they’re pretty bored, it doesn’t take much to get them to Shanghai, where they meet up with her brother and their teen son Alex (Luke Ford).

Bad Dragon

Obviously Alex has inherited the bumbling adventurer gene from his dad and has managed to find the tomb of the Dragon Emperor and his ancient army. This Mummy’s back story is that he betrayed a witch (Michelle Yeoh) and was imprisoned in the tomb, even though he became immortal. Now that he’s free, he wants to take over the world and marches to Shanghai and then Shangri-La, while battling our heroes along the way.

Yetis?

The good guys are joined by the immortal witch, a young woman, and a grizzled pilot as they try to take down the Dragon Emperor, who actually turns into a three headed Dragon along the way. After running into some scary CGI Yetis in the Himalayas, the climax take place in the desert with The Emperors mummified army taking on the dead slaves who were buried under the Great Wall of China. Who’ll be left standing at the end?

The Bottom Line

These films are all pretty much the same, so if you liked the last couple, you’ll probably like this one. That being said, they’re not very good flicks. There isn’t much to the acting, script or plot, which are normally pretty important pieces and Brendan Fraser gets really annoying as he drops wanna-be Indiana Jones-style one-liners in the heat of battle. So if you’re desperate to turn off your brain for a few hours and watch a bunch of skeletons fight, go right ahead.
