I've been BFFs with this kid for three years. We're so close that people think he’s my brother. We have our own language, we live in the same apartment building. We've been through so much together. But now I realize that I have a crush on him. I never thought it would happen so I'm freaked and also, I'm not a girly-girl so this is my first crush – besides the first-grade ones. What am I supposed to do?

It’s totally normal and natural for a friendship to become something more – it happens all the time, all over the world. In fact, some of the best and longest-lasting relationships are ones that have evolved out of friendships. So don’t think of this as a bad thing!
There is, however, one thing you need to be careful about. If you reveal your true feelings to your best friend and he does not feel the same way toward you, you risk making him uncomfortable and losing the close friendship that the two of you have right now.
Having said that, you have a couple of options.
Your first option is to do nothing. If you’re not willing to risk your friendship then you may not want to reveal your feelings to your crush. That is the least risky thing you can do. And who knows? Maybe one day he will tell you that he likes you. If you can be patient, then you should wait.
Your other option is to let him know how you feel. Remember, honesty is always a good policy, so you shouldn’t be ashamed of your feeling or afraid to reveal them. You can be totally straightforward and just have a talk with him, or you can be more sneaky about it and ask him questions to see if he likes you, too. If you look in your heart I think you will find the answer of what you think the best thing to do – for you – is.
