Spider-Man Movie :: Spidey Facts

One of the coolest super heroes on the planet will be making his big screen debut on May 3, 2002. Obviously, I'm talking about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Tobey Maguire snagged the lead role as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, Kirsten Dunst plays his love interest, Mary Jane Watson and Willem Dafoe plays the villainous Green Goblin. Check out these interesting facts about the upcoming Spider-Man Movie.

Tobey Maguire spent several months preparing for the role of Spider-Man by practicing Yoga, gymnastics, trampoline work, weight lifting, biking, running as well as kicking and punching.

The audience will be able to see points of view of New York City through Spider-Man's eyes from angles that no one has seen before. Spidey clings to buildings, jumps from ledges and swings between and around New York's skyscrapers. Only the birds can see the Big Apple like the wall crawler.

During production, four Spider-Man costumes were stolen from the Sony Pictures Studio lot.

Producers didn't want the fight scenes to look "martial artsy" so a fight choreographer invented fighting styles to fit the characters of Spider-Man and the vicious Green Goblin.

Studio work for Spider-Man was shot in Los Angeles. Outside photography was filmed in New York and on the streets of LA that were made to look like New York.

Spider Wrangler, Steve Kutcher, used special make-up to paint colors on the back of a live Black Widow Spider that lands on Tobey Maguire's hand. Steve had four assistants helping him control the movements of spiders on the set.

Stan Lee, the creator of Spider-Man, will have a walk-on part in the flick.

The webbing on the outside of Spider-Man's costume is raised so it appears 3 dimensional.

Oakley lenses were used for the eyes of Spider-Man's costume.

Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man/Peter Parker) and Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane Watson) began dating while filming Spider-Man. Watch their real-life chemistry bubble over onto the big screen! Unfortunately, you won't see the sparks fly between the two at the flick's premiere - they broke up.
