Question by Courious Sporty

How can I become the best I can be in cheering?

Dear Courious Sporty,

Obviously to be the best you can be at anything takes practice, but there are other things that will help to. Here is a list of things that will help you become a better cheerleader:

Health

Cheerleaders have to look good and feel good. Eating healthy foods and a well-balanced diet will do wonders for your body, mind and soul. You’ll look great and your confidence will bring out awesome energy, which every good cheerleader needs.

Dancing

Cheerleading comes from the idea of dancing. If you learn dancing from jazz, tap, hip-hop or ballet classes, your cheerleading moves are going to come easy. Dance teaches rhythm, flexibility and a lot of cool body moves to music. Another good way to learn how to dance is by watching a lot of music videos… just practice the moves to your favorite songs.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics class will be a humongous help. The training that you will get from a gymnastics class will go hand in hand with all of your cheerleading moves. Gymnastics coaches are often also involved with teaching cheerleaders all the big moves, so if you can learn back flips and acrobatics, you'll be an awesome cheerleader.

Friends

Becoming close with some friends who are also cheerleaders will do wonders. The more you hang out and talk about your cheerleading routines, moves and new ideas, the more you will rock it on the sidelines.

Mentor

Try to find someone who already is an amazing cheerleader with lots of experience. They can help you figure out all the tricks that they’ve learned over the many years they’ve been cheering.

Cheerleading is a great activity but also very dangerous. Be careful you don’t push yourself too hard. Did you know that cheerleading has the most injuries than any other high school sport? Just remember to stretch properly and practice things safely all the time with your friends to spot you.
