It’s hard to believe that one of the fabulous singers on the hit Fox TV show Glee could be turned down by American Idol. But Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes Jones on Glee, faced just that. She auditioned at age 17 and didn’t even get to see the judges. She was turned down by the producers in one of the earlier rounds. But that rejection didn’t slow her down. She found an even better gig on another Fox TV show.

The 24 year old Los Angeles native Amber Riley was born on February 15, 1986. She was scouted for the role of Mercedes Jones by Ryan Murphy. He saw her on the pilots of “St. Sass” and “Cedric the Entertainer Presents” and knew she would be perfect for the part.

Amber Riley hasn’t restricted herself to television. She auditioned for the part of Effie in Dreamgirls. Unfortunately that didn’t work out. But that didn’t stop her. She’s acted in many theatrical productions including “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Mystery on the Docks,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and more.
