American Idol: Season 11, Week 1 :: Audition #1, 2 & 3

Jan 20, 2011

This week on American Idol (Season 11, Episode 1), the new season kicks off in Savanagh, Georgia, where the judges discovered a ton of new talent. Read Kidzworld’s recap of “Audition #1” which aired on January 18, 2012, to discover what you missed.

Audition #1: Savanagh, Georgia

Day 1 in Savanagh, Georgia, delivered a ton of young talent including 17-year-old David Leathers Jr. (also known as “Mr. Steal-Your-Girl”). He beat Scotty McCreery in a local singing competition, so it was no surprise when he wowed the judges. We also met other talented singers, including 16-year-old Gabi Carrubba who is also a world champion tap dancer; 15-year-old Shannon Magraine, whose father played in the World Series; and siblings Schyler and Colton Dixon.

The judges met some interesting characters in Savanagh, including Shaun Kraisman, a terrific Ryan Seacrest impersonator, and 24-year-old Amy Brumfield, who currently lives with her boyfriend in a tent in the woods.

Audition #2: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Audition #2 took the judges to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the first time in American Idol history. There we met some stand-out talent, including the wacky Creighton Fraker, who made up his own audition song during his long bus ride from New York. Other amazing singers included 15-year-old Eben Franckewitz, who resembles Justin Bieber; Erika Van Pelt, a wedding singer and mobile DJ; and 24-year-old Hallie Day, who overcame a drug addition.

Audition #3: San Diego, California

On Sunday, the judges moved on to San Diego, California, were they met young mom Ashley Robles, who shined with a Whitney Houston song; rapper Alexa Shields, who appeared on the Ellen show; and 19-year-old frat boy Kyle Crews, who had the best male voice the judges had seen so far. Last but not least, Jim Carrey's 24-year-old daughter Jane auditioned. She wasn't great, but the judges put her through to Hollywood anyway.

Many of the reviews and critics say it's bad because they are only looking at it from 'comic to movie' perspective. It was still a really cool movie and you should go see it. I'd have to agree with this. The movie itself was great. I think some people looked at it poorly because they were expecting something more similar to the older films or comparing it too hard to the comics. I personally think that it was a great way to reinvent some of the characters.

"It's so hard to talk when you want to k-ll yourself. That's above and beyond everything else, and it's not a mental complaint-it's a physical thing, like it's physically hard to open your mouth and make the words come out. They don't come out smooth and in conjunction with your brain the way normal people's words do; they come out in chunks as if from a crushed-ice dispenser; you stumble on them as they gather behind your lower lip. So you just keep quiet.” Ned Vizzini, "It's Kind of a Funny Story"

“Isn't there something in living dangerously?' There's a great deal in it,' the Controller replied. 'Men and women must have their adrenals stimulated from time to time.' What?' questioned the Savage, uncomprehending. It's one of the conditions of perfect health. That's why we've made the V.P.S. treatments compulsory.' V.P.S.?' Violent Passion Surrogate. Regularly once a month. We flood the whole system with adrenin. It's the complete physiological equivalent of fear and rage. All the tonic effects of murdering Desdemona and being murdered by Othello, without any of the inconvenience.' But I like the inconveniences.' We don't,' said the Controller. 'We prefer to do things comfortably.' But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.' In fact,' said Mustapha Mond, 'you're claiming the right to be unhappy. Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have ######## and cancer, the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind.' There was a long silence. I claim them all,' said the Savage at last. Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. 'You're welcome,' he said.”

"There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there."
