Square Enix's E3 2018 Press Conference Recap

Jun 11, 2018

By: Max Cannon

Square Enix is known for their impressive RPGs and detailed worlds. It's been awhile since we've seen such a sizable E3 presence from them but a potential reveal of Marvel's upcoming Avengers game is reason enough to get hyped. Let's run down all of the news!

A Tomb Raider Deep Dive

The game initially got a trailer during Xbox's conference that helped set the tone for the upcoming game but this showing at Square Enix's show gave a deeper look at the gameplay including trapping and tricking enemies into attacking one another. There's very much a Metal Gear Solid-esque vibe going on with this new entry, which is awesome considering how similar 2013's Tomb Raider was to the recent sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. The game launches on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 14th.

Final Fantasy XIV Online Merges with Monster Hunter

A quick look at Final Fantasy XIV and it's upcoming update/patch concluded with a surprising but welcome crossover of two of Square's biggest properties. Final Fantasy XIV X Monster Hunter Worlds is coming Summer 2018 and we didn't get much info other than a little look at a Palico assisting in a massive monster fight. Keep an eye out for more details in the future.

Captain Spirit

Another title that was first shown at yesterday's Xbox conference, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a free spinoff set in the world of Life is Strange. The showing focused on some slight character customization details but we didn't get much information that wasn't at Xbox's show.

Dragon Quest XI

A new trailer for Dragon Quest XI concluded with a September 4th release date for the US audiences, considering that the title has already been out in Japan for a good while.

Babylon's Fall

A fantasy-type game developed by PlatinumGames' looks like it's hitting PS4 and PC in 2019. This trailer that wrapped up with an epic battle began by taking us through the deep lore of this game's world. This seems like it could be the start of a big new franchise for PlatinumGames and Square Enix.

The Quiet Man

A bizarre live-action trailer mixed in with some in-game hand-to-hand combat. At first, we saw some shots of New York City so I'd assumed it would be a glimpse at that Avengers game so it put the game off on the wrong foot. It seems like the lead characters struggle with deafness leads into the gameplay but there's really not too much here to get crazy excited for.

Kingdom Hearts III

The same thing we saw at Xbox, a really bizarre choice to close out their showcase with. If you missed it from Microsoft, here's another chance to check out the trailer.
