It's the golden age of pirates and the cursed pirate ship the Black Pearl, under the command of wily Captain Barbossa, has attacked the town of Port Royal and kidnapped the Governor's beautiful daughter Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley.) Enter Will Turner (Orlando Bloom,) Elizabeth's childhood friend and true love, and imprisoned Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp.) Sweet! Turner and Sparrow commandeer (ya know I mean steal) the fastest ship in the British fleet to rescue Elizabeth and recapture the Black Pearl. Oh yeah, Sparrow is the legit captain of the Pearl, until Barbossa and crew mutinied and left Sparrow to die. Can you say pissed?! And there's one more twist - the curse on the Black Pearl dooms the crew to live forever as the undead, with the moonlight revealing them as nothing more than living skeletons. Very Cool!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Cursed or Not?
Pirates is a great ride. Orlando Bloom is yummy, (although I think I prefer my Bloom blonde, blue-eyed and pointy-eared.) Still he kicks butt, as usual, with the weapons-play. For Bloom fans everywhere, check out the smokin' kiss Turner gives Swann near the end of the movie. This alone is so totally worth the price of admission! Now let's talk Johnny Depp! This guy may be 40, and normally that would be gross, but he is sweet. Okay, this is not the movie where you crush on Johnny cuz he depicts a pretty wacky, twitchy, and kinda oily pirate. And his teeth - yuck! But he is still completely charming - and funny - and that's what makes this his movie.
Other Great Pirates of the Caribbean
It wouldn't be cool to overlook two other stars of the Curse of the Black Pearl. Check out Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and his skeletal crew. Barbossa is as weird and wacky as Sparrow. The animation and FX rule when the pirate captain and his crew turn into living skeletons, scaling the sides of ships and walking the ocean floor.
Special Pirate Tribute
Those of you who have been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland will recognize perfectly reproduced scenes in the pirate town on Tortuga.
Pirate Mistakes
As much as we love to watch the Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom eyecandy and all the other chewy swashbucklin' goodness... this movie is 135 minutes long. Guys, more isn't always better!
