Before he was an NBA superstar and before he was The Matrix, Shawn Marion was just an ordinary 15-year-old kid. We caught up with the Phoenix Suns forward at the EA NBA Live Summer Camp in Vancouver, Canada for an exclusive interview about his freshman year in high school!
Simon: What were you like back then?
Shawn Marion: Definitely, I was class clown. I've always kind of been the class clown, but I was also definitely shy.
Simon: What was a typical outfit you would wear?
Shawn Marion: I tried to keep it simple - jeans and t-shirts, nice polos and stuff.
Simon: Did you play any other sports?
Shawn Marion: No, I did not. If I would have, it would have been football. I tried to run track just a little bit, but it didn't work out.
Simon: What kind of music did you like?
Shawn Marion: Rap, pretty much. R&B and everything. I've always liked music.
Simon: What musical artists were big back then?
Shawn Marion: Oh, my freshman year? Oh, Jodeci was huge. Remember Jo? That was '92. Jodeci...En Vogue. Let's see, Tupac, BMG, UGK...people down south. Who else was out in '92?
Simon: Hammer was. Were you a Hammer man?
Shawn Marion: Yeah Hammer was cool, he was alright when he came out.
Simon: What TV shows did you watch?
Shawn Marion: Oh, Cosby Show was big back then. I loved cartoons...whatever
Simon: Were you into video games?
Shawn Marion: Oh yeah, Super Nintendo. Lakers versus Celtics. Street Fighter...Contra, Killer Instinct, Sonic the Hedgehog, all that stuff.
